Esses estudos — Prevalence of Spiritual and Religious Experiences in the General Population: A Brazilian Nationwide Study (2022) e The Role of Spiritual and Religious Experiences in Religious Switching: A Nationwide Study in Brazil(2023) — ofereceram, juntos, um panorama inédito sobre a frequência das EERs na população brasileira e suas relações com as mudanças de filiação religiosa.

It is observed that there is a significant increase in scientific publications on the subject of spirituality and religiosity in the health area. Such studies show that patients would like this topic to be addressed in their psychotherapy care, but it is identified that there is a lack of adequate training to carry out these issues for psychologists. So, this article aims to verify the effectiveness of an online training on the clinical management of religiosity, spirituality, secularity, and unusual experiences in psychotherapy for 46 Brazilian psychotherapist psychologists. As a result, we were able to observe the statistically significant increase in the total CRESEAP score, indicating that the competencies measured were satisfactorily developed. The P-DUREL (IR) scale was positively correlated in the pre-test with the CRESEAP subscale “Therapist’s Spirituality in the Therapeutic Relationship” before training and after, ceased to exist, demonstrating that the participants’ spiritual and religious beliefs were no longer interfering in the clinical practice. The ARES scale was positively related to the “Differential Diagnosis” subscale in the pre-test, and in the post-test, this association ceased to exist, indicating that all psychotherapists can perform the differential diagnosis, regardless of their faith. Therefore, the online training proved to be effective for developing spiritual and religious competencies in Brazilian psychotherapists, offering evidence-based resources to support professional performance on this topic. It is suggested that other studies be carried out with a larger number of participants and with comparative groups of therapists (working with different clinical approaches of psychotherapy, clinical experiences, and atheists).

This article presents the construction process, evidence of content validity and initial evidence of psychometric validity of the Questionnaire of Competencies for the Clinical Management of Religiosity, Spirituality, Secularity and Anomalous Experiences in Psychotherapy (CRESEAP). The CRESEAP was developed to investigate the competencies of Brazilian psychotherapists for the clinical management of Religiosity/Spirituality dimension, Secularity and Anomalous Experiences. The process involved five stages: theoretical basis, construction of the preliminary version, analysis of the items by expert judges, semantic analysis of the items and pilot study. In its final version, the CRESEAP has 29 quantitative and four qualitative questions. Five factors were identified through Exploratory Factor Analysis: 1. Openness, acceptance and consideration of the topic in psychotherapy; 2. The spirituality of the psychotherapist in the therapeutic relationship; 3. Differential diagnosis; 4. Clinical investigation; and 5. Self-awareness. Furthermore, it presented evidence of content validity and initial evidence of psychometric validity. It is concluded that CRESEAP is the first Brazilian instrument on the subject, and it is expected to contribute to the Clinical area, especially to the practice of psychotherapists regarding the clinical management of issues of religiosity, spirituality, secularity and anomalous experiences. Furthermore, it is suggested that other studies on this instrument be carried out.

The goal of this Clinical Psychology study was to present the possible therapeutic effects of Relaxation Techniques in elderly people. The systematic review was conducted by two researchers who performed inquiries independently in the following databases: PubMed, PsycInfo, Scopus and Lilacs in June 2015 using the string: “relaxation” OR “relaxation therapy” AND “elderly people.” The initial selection resulted in 244 articles and, from the criteria for inclusion and exclusion, 11 studies were analysed for this review as of May 2017. This research found evidence of the effectiveness of Relaxation Techniques in elderly populations, especially in reducing symptoms of anxiety, related cognitive difficulties, physical symptoms, especially tension headaches and increasing immunity through the diminishment of stress.

The scientific study of religious/spiritual experiences has been neglected throughout the history of psychology causing a lack of differentiation between them and psychotic symptoms. The objective of this study was to analyze and compare two theories: Integral Psychology, by Wilber, and the Psychobiological Model, by Cloninger, in order to distinguish health and mental illness in religious/spiritual experiences. The Wilberian concept of “Pre-Trans Fallacy” is a reading key to differ religious/spiritual experiences from mental disorders. It is similar to the conception of Maturity of Character observed in Cloninger’s concepts of Self-directedness and Self-transcendence.

A major issue in the study of dissociation concerns the cross-cultural validity of definitions and measurements used to identify and classify dissociative disorders. There is also extensive debate on the etiological factors underlying dissociative experiences. Cross-cultural research is essential to elucidate these issues, particularly regarding evidence obtained from countries in which the study of dissociation is still in its infancy. The aim of this article was to discuss Brazilian research on the topic of dissociation, highlighting its contributions for the understanding of dissociative experiences in nonclinical populations and for the validity and relevance of dissociative disorders in the contexts of psychiatry, psychology, and psychotherapy. We also consider the ways in which dissociative experiences are assimilated by Brazilian culture and religious expressions, and the implications of Brazilian studies for the sociocultural investigation of dissociation. We conclude by addressing the limitations of these studies and potential areas for future research.

Religious switching is a key aspect of spirituality that seems to be increasing. Spiritual and religious experiences (SREs) are often reported as inducing religious change; however, there is a shortage of large sample studies investigating this issue. This cross-sectional study aims to explore the associations between SREs and religious switching, highlighting possible clinical implications. Data were collected through a Brazilian nationwide self-administered panel-based online survey, including 1053 participants. Religious switching profile was identified and 16 SREs were tested as predictors of religious switching. Our results show a massive emigration from the dominant Catholic religion towards growing religious affiliations (Neo-Pentecostalism and Spiritism) and secularization. There was a higher proportion of women, mixed race, middle-aged, and married/cohabiting among Converted and a higher proportion of men, young, and single among Secularists. Most SREs were predictors of switching to a new religion. However, the experience of “connection with nature” and “seeing the spirit of a dead person” were also associated to participants who kept their birth religion or to those who became secularists, reflecting the importance of spiritual experiences as phenomena that go across and beyond religion.

Spiritual and religious experiences (SREs) are common subjective phenomena related to the awareness of transcendence, which transforms one's perception of life, death and suffering. Despite the high prevalence of SREs worldwide, not enough studies have been conducted beyond Europe and North America. To fill this gap, this study investigates the prevalence of SREs in Brazil and their association with socio-demographic variables. This online cross-sectional study includes participants from all regions of Brazil. Sixteen SREs were investigated, being categorized into 4 groups: mystical, mediumistic, psi-related and past life/near-death experiences. Prevalence was calculated as percentages and multinomial logistic regression models were used. A total of 1,053 Brazilians were included; 92% reported one SRE in their lifetime and 47.5% experienced at least one SRE frequently. Participants reported having had at least one mystical experience (35%), one psi-related experience (27.7%), and one mediumistic experience (11%). Half the sample had “felt the presence of a dead person” and 70% experienced precognitive dreams at least once. In a multivariate analysis, SREs were associated with the female gender but showed no associations with income, education, employment status and ethnicity. Mystical experiences were associated with age 55 and older. In summary, SREs are very prevalent across different strata of the population, and deserve more attention from researchers and clinicians in order to clarify their nature and implications for mental health care and research in Brazil.

Mapping relationships of nonordinary experiences and mental health: A network analysis in a representative Brazilian sample. Psychology of Consciousness: Theory, Research, and Practice. Advance online publication.
Nonordinary experiences (NOEs), such as hearing voices or dissolution of the self, are more common than typically assumed yet poorly understood, and their effect on mental health underexplored. We present the topological structure of a range of NOEs and their differential relationship with mental health in a representative sample of Brazilian adults for race, sex, region, and age (N = 878). A network analysis revealed three coherent clusters, indicating that specific NOEs tend to cooccur, hinting at possible biological or cultural underlying mechanisms. This advances previous research that typically treated experiences in isolation and instead suggests a coherent experience structure. Individual experiences within clusters showed both positive and negative associations with depression scores in particular challenging simplistic explanations of NOEs as either pathological or spiritually enriching. Our findings highlight the need for research regarding the structure and nature of NOEs to help researchers and clinicians better understand their implications for mental health.
